TREMEZZINA
Lake Como

Tremezzina is located on the western banks of Lake Como, just opposite Bellagio, and is the result of a recent merger of the municipalities of Lenno, Mezzegra, Ossuccio and Tremezzo.

Visiting Tremezzina means having the opportunity to enjoy a place rich in atmosphere, history, and attractions. For example… did you know that some scenes from Star Wars were filmed here? 😀

📷 Among the main must-sees, in fact, Tremezzina is home to two of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como: Villa Balbianello, set for major international films and also weddings, and Villa Carlotta, a museum and botanical garden.

But there are not only villas. Discover all the must-see places in the most beautiful hamlets of Tremezzo, Ossuccio and Lenno: there are beautiful beaches, historic churches and walks not to be missed.

Another cool thing is that you can reach popular towns such as Bellagio and Varenna in 10-20 minutes by ferry and Menaggio in 10′ by bus. Here are the best things to do in Tremezzo and surroundings: get ready for your Lake Como vacation!

If you can, visit Tremezzina in the off-season!
Lake Como is a true corner of Italian paradise that attracts tourists from all over the world, especially during the high season (late May to late September). My advice is, if you can, to visit Lake Como during the low season (for example, in April or October) to have a more relaxing and authentic travel experience.

VILLA BALBIANELLO & VILLA CARLOTTA
Two extraordinary villas on Lake Como

Villa Balbianello

Villa Balbianello is a spectacular complex that includes, among other things, beautiful terraced gardens, two residential buildings and a portico with breathtaking views of Lake Como.

Located in the hamlet of Lenno, on the tip of the Lavedo peninsula, Villa Balbianello has been the set for films such as Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Casino Royale. It is also one of the most popular locations for photo shoots and weddings on Lake Como.

If you are visiting Lake Como, don’t miss the opportunity to see this wonderful villa. You can choose to visit just the gardens (€12 for regular admission) or purchase the combined admission (€23), which also includes a 45-minute guided tour of the villa’s interior that will take you through its historical events.

The villa is mainly open from mid-March to end of November, and it’s closed on Mondays and Wednesdays (except on holidays). For winter openings, visit the official website. Read more about Villa Balbianello!

Villa Carlotta

The hamlet of Tremezzo is home to one of Lake Como’s most famous villas, Villa Carlotta. The villa – which has its own pier along the Como-Colico route provided by the local public boat service – has neoclassical features and is surrounded by a vast terraced garden, where you can spend much of the day without the risk of getting bored.

Spring is obviously the best season to visit the villa: enjoy the scent and colors of azaleas, rhododendrons and hundreds of other plants from all corners of the world!

When you are “tired” of all these natural beauties, you can enter the villa and visit its art collection, which includes valuable masterpieces by Antonio Canova, Francesco Hayez and Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Villa Carlotta is open mainly from mid-March to early November, with some winter openings that you can learn about by visiting the official website. Regular admission, which includes both the gardens and the museum inside the villa, costs €15. Read more about Villa Carlotta!

HAMLET OF TREMEZZO
Perfect combination of landscape and architecture

Tremezzo is the main hamlet of Tremezzina. It combines a hilly hinterland with a tourist lakefront characterized by sumptuous villas and hotels (such as the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, one of the few 5-star hotels on Lake Como).

There is not only Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo! At a very short distance from the Tremezzo pier, where you can arrive in less than twenty minutes from either Bellagio or Varenna, you can find the main attractions of this village, such as:

• Lake Como’s Landscape Museum: located inside Villa Mainona, it houses a collection of old prints of the lake that offer a fascinating look of Lake Como, and a multimedia system that allows visitors to compare maps and historical images with the current layout of the area.

• Parco Civico Olivelli: this park is a small botanical and architectural gem that provides access to the lake and is ideal for relaxing in the shade of its towering trees or sitting at tables in its small café. In summer, this park can host food and music events in a unique landscape setting.

• Church of San Lorenzo: this church is an imposing eclectic-style building with a beautiful facade featuring neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque elements. The presence of towering hills in the background makes the location of this church truly extraordinary.

HAMLETS OF OSSUCCIO AND LENNO
Where nature blends with history and the sacred

Ossuccio

Ossuccio is one of the most characteristic hamlets of Tremezzina. It overlooks the Zoca de l’Oli (literally: oil basin), a quiet inlet opposite Isola Comacina so named because of the remarkable tranquility of its waters. Here are the main things to see in Ossuccio.

• Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo: a Romanesque-style church, dating from the 10th to 12th centuries, with a must-see interior richly decorated with wall paintings.

• Isola Comacina: it is  the only island on Lake Como, rich in historical artifacts dating back to the early Middle Ages and very fascinating from an artistic and naturalistic point of view. Read more about Isola Comacina!

• Sacro Monte di Ossuccio: it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that winds along the slope of the Ossuccio mountain and includes the Sanctuary and 14 chapels illustrating the Mysteries of the Rosary through 230 life-size statues. Regardless of the religious value, the pleasant walk that leads to the shrine offers beautiful views of Lake Como.

Lenno

The hamlet that is home to the world-famous Villa Balbianello is also known for several other attractions. Here is what to see in Lenno.

• Golfo di Venere: this gulf lies between Lenno’s lakefront and the Dosso di Lavedo, the peninsula on the tip of which is Villa Balbianello. There is a magical atmosphere here and magnificent views can be admired while strolling on one of the most beautiful promenades on Lake Como, or relaxing at one of the cafes or restaurants with tables overlooking the lake.

• Lido di Lenno: Lido di Lenno is a historic lido overlooking the Golfo di Venere, ideal for relaxing during hot summer days and for a romantic lunch or dinner

• Church of Santo Stefano and Battistero of San Giovanni: the two buildings stand a short distance from the shores of Lake Como, and while the former still retains its religious functions, the latter now mainly hosts contemporary art exhibitions.

A few tips for your stay in Tremezzina

HISTORICAL AND NATURE WALKS
To immerse yourself in the charm of the past

The vast territory of Tremezzina offers the possibility of numerous walks of varying intensity and on different types of terrain. Here are three of the most popular walks that can be taken in this area.

Greenway del Lago di Como

The Greenway del Lago di Como is a pleasant promenade that begins in Colonno, right next to Argegno, and reaches Griante (the next village after Tremezzina).

The route follows the route of the ancient Via Regina, the road built by the Romans to connect Como with territories beyond the Alps.

The Greenway is an excellent opportunity for single or couple travelers, as well as families with children, to see Lake Como from a different perspective.

Along this 11.5-kilometer (7 miles) walk, hikers will pass through several villages and have the chance to come across wonderful examples of architecture, villas and gardens.

Sacro Monte di Ossuccio

As anticipated in the section about Ossuccio, Sacro Monte is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that runs along the side of Monte Ossuccio.

Following this approximately 40-minute route, you will have the opportunity to see the 14 chapels along the way and finally arrive at the Sanctuary where there is also a small trattoria serving traditional dishes.

San Benedetto in Val Perlana

An itinerary between history and art to the Abbey of San Benedetto in Val Perlana, a walk immersed in nature and surrounded by silence.

The former monastery of San Benedetto, an interesting example of Romanesque architecture, is located in Val Perlana along the slopes of Monte Galbiga and can be reached via mule tracks.

Visit mylakecomo.co for more information about the path to reach the Abbey of San Benedetto.
